A Wrap Up On the Girls Golf Season

Though the girls’ golf team had a lot of new members, most players say they enjoyed the season. The girls competed in four 18-hole tournaments and thirteen 9-hole matches.

“This year, we were a very inexperienced team,” Coach Phillip Yarian said of the challenges they faced.

“We had three girls who had never swung a club before, two incoming freshmen, and one returner after our top golfer moved this past summer,” he said.

However, there were also many good things about the season.

“I made many new friends with my team members and golfers from other schools,” said sophomore Laci Keppel. “We also had a wonderful coach who encouraged all of us that we could do it.”

“I decided to join the team during my freshman year because it sounded fun and I wanted to try something different,” said junior Allenna Bertram.

Allenna said she enjoyed playing at the Lady Aviators’ home course, Sleepy Hollow, the best.

Asked if she had a favorite match, sophomore Bridgette Runion stated that she “enjoyed many matches from the season. I don’t think I could pick just one.”

“Coach Yarian has been an amazing coach, always pushing us to do our best, helping us improve, and making us laugh when we’re having a bad day,” said freshman Lily Walker. “He grouped us together so that we were always playing with someone we knew well.”

Freshman Anna Eversdyke was the team’s top golfer this season, breaking into the 40s for the first time. Anna had a slight advantage, having golfed with her dad, her grandfather and her brother. She also played on the middle school team for two years.

Anna feels the most memorable match was the one that came down to the wire. But the team pulled off the win over the Minerva Lions at their home course. In addition, junior Emma Huff had the second lowest score of the season with a 53.

The girls pushed through the challenges and chalked up two victories this season.  Anna’s consistent play earned her 2nd Team All Tri-County honors.

All the girls on the team plan to return next year. They are looking forward to seeing how much they can improve over the summer, with the goal of bettering their overall record next season.
