Academic Challenge Wins District Tournament

By ALLIE COX

For the first time, the Alliance High School team won the Academic Challenge tournament held at the University of Mount Union.
The tournament is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club and the university in order to reward local students for academic success. The winning team receives a traveling trophy and a $4,000 scholarship that can be awarded to any student who chooses to enroll at Mount Union.
Under the direction of Coach Shawn Fontaine, the Alliance team consisted of team captain Jack Madison, a senior, and juniors Howard Frazier and Brendan McGeehen. Alternates were sophomores Anna Zumbar and Allie Cox. They competed against teams from Marlington, Sebring, West Branch, Minerva and Salem.
Before the tournament, the teams took pictures and were treated to a lunch with Kiwanis Club members and Mount Union students. They heard from speaker John Myers, who encouraged them to spend their high school years learning new things and discovering what makes them unique.
Questions were read by Mr. James Ballor, a retired AHS English teacher. The audience was provided the opportunity to answer questions and win candy between rounds.
The first round consisted of the teams from Sebring, Minerva and Salem. Sebring won a tiebreaker with Minerva that advanced both teams to the final round.
The second round consisted of Alliance, Marlington and West Branch. Alliance won and qualified for the final round. The final round was very competitive and close between the three teams. In the end, Alliance was able to pull ahead and win the tournament.
The team has had a great season with seven wins and only one loss, which occurred in their first match. They will advance to the regional tournament in May. The students have worked very hard and are excited to compete.
